What are the regulations regarding baby car seats ?
According to regulations, a car seat is mandatory for your child until the age of 10. The car seat must be approved according to standard R44/04 or R129 i-Size and adapted to the weight and size of the child. Children under 15 months must be seated rear-facing.
The R129 standard, also known as i-Size, was introduced to improve the safety of children when travelling. Choosing a car seat that is suitable for your child now also depends on their height, which makes it much easier for parents. Car seats offer better protection for children's heads and necks.
The old R44 standard is still available, but its production and import into the EU will be phased out. However, don't worry, R44 seats can still be used for at least 8 years! So you don't need to replace your current seat and can continue to transport your child in an R44 seat.
Our tips for installation:
The car seat must be installed in the back of the car (unless this is not possible, e.g. if there is no back seat).
In the front, the passenger seat must not have an active airbag if a rear-facing seat is placed there.
Can I secure my child in the car with the seat belt alone?
The ISOFIX system offers a safer installation by connecting the car seat directly to the two metal anchor points inside your vehicle. This minimises the risk of incorrect installation and ensures optimal safety for your child.
However, if your vehicle or car seat is not equipped with the ISOFIX system, car seats with seat belts can also be a safe and practical alternative! Simply follow the instructions in the manual or user guide carefully.
What is the Isofix system?
The Isofix system allows for quick and easy installation of the car seat, significantly reducing the risk of incorrect installation. The Isofix system was invented in 1997 by Britax Römer in collaboration with car manufacturer Volkswagen. This system has been mandatory on all new car models leaving the factory since February 2011.
The Isofix system is installed using two anchor points located between the seat base and the backrest of the car seat, which fit perfectly into the car seat connectors. This makes the connection between the car seat and the car seat more stable and safer than using seat belts alone, and reduces the risk of the car seat moving in the event of an impact.
How to install an ISOFIX car seat in 3 steps?
1. Place the car seat on the back seat of your car.
2. Pull out the ISOFIX attachment points from the base or car seat. These are the metal bars located at the back of the seat.
3. Push the car seat firmly against the backrest to anchor the two attachment points into the metal clips on the vehicle seat. You will hear a ‘click’ when this has been done correctly.
