Up to what age must a child travel in a car seat?

If you are travelling with a child by car, a car seat is compulsory up to the age of 10. The car seat must be suitable for the child’s age and build (height and weight).

It is prohibited to carry a child under the age of ten in the front seats of any vehicle, except:

. if the child is seated facing backwards in a seat designed for this purpose and the airbag has been deactivated;

. if the car has no rear seats or rear seat belts;

. if the rear seats of the vehicle are temporarily unusable or occupied by children under the age of 10 who are correctly secured.

Children aged 10 and over must be secured with a seat belt.

What car seats are available to hire?

Your child must travel in a car seat that is suitable for their age and body size (height and weight). Our car seats for hire are suitable for children from birth to 10 years old, with or without Isofix attachments.

Infant car seat for 0 to 18 kg or 40 to 105 centimetres.

The JOIE car seat available for hire is suitable for children from birth to 4 years old or weighing 0 to 18 kg, falling within Group O+/1. For use from birth, the car seat is hired with a removable insert that is particularly well-padded and comfortable – a real cosy cocoon for babies.

You can position the seat either rear-facing for babies from 40 to 105 cm or forward-facing from 76 to 105 cm

The car seat is very easy to use as it features a height-adjustable headrest for the child; there’s no need to fiddle with the harness anymore! The baby car seat naturally complies with the ECE R44/04 standard and meets the fundamental safety requirements set out in the European safety standard.

What to check before setting off!

Before setting off on your journey, it’s best to check the following points:

1. Make sure the car seat is suitable for your child. Check that it is appropriate for their age and body type (height and weight). Don’t choose based on age alone: two children of the same age may be different heights!

2. That the car seat is type-approved. Child restraint systems must be type-approved and bear the relevant type-approval label. At FAMILIB, all seats are type-approved.

3. Ensure the car seat is correctly installed. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions! Regulations state that child car seats must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. To do this, you can consult the instruction leaflets and installation videos online in OUR PRODUCTS.

4. Ensure the harness or seatbelt has no slack. When the child is in the seat, they must be properly adjusted to fit the child’s body shape.

5. Ensure no accessories are added. Avoid cushions, adaptors or any items not authorised by the manufacturer, as they could compromise the safety of the car seat.

A few common mistakes when fitting a baby car seat in a car

One of the most common mistakes is rushing. After a flight, with suitcases and tired children, it’s easy to want to get going as quickly as possible. But the car seat is worth taking a few extra minutes over.

Avoid these mistakes:

•    Fitting the seat in an unsuitable position.

•    Failing to tighten the seatbelt or anchorage system properly.

•    Leaving the harness too loose.

•    Using a seat that does not match the child’s height or weight.

•    Putting the baby in the seat whilst wearing a bulky coat, as this can prevent the harness from fitting correctly.

•    Adding accessories not approved by the manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions about hiring baby car seats

Can someone help me fit the car seat in my car?

The staff member at the collection point will be able to offer advice on how to use and fit the product, but will not be able to fit the car seat in the car for you. To help you do this, you’ll find user guides and instructional videos for the products in the OUR PRODUCTS section.

Can I return the equipment to a different collection point?

No, collection and return must take place at the same collection point.

How much is the deposit and how do I pay it?

The amount of the deposit varies depending on the item hired; it is stated at the time of your booking and on your invoice.

The amount is:

• 50 or 100 euros, depending on the baby carrier.

• 100 euros for a Phil and Teds travel cot.

• 150 to 200 euros for a 4-wheel pushchair or a car seat

• 200 to 250 euros for a 3-wheel all-terrain pushchair.

The deposit can be paid by credit card at any time via the ‘MY ACCOUNT’ section under ‘MY HIRES’. Depending on the collection point, it can also be paid by cheque or in cash on arrival.

Where can I find the product manuals and videos?

The manuals and videos for our products are available on our Familib website under the ‘OUR PRODUCTS’ section.

What are the hire rates?

Rates are based on the equipment, location and duration of the hire. They are shown when you run a hire simulation for one day or more on the FAMILIB website. Prices are quoted in euros, including VAT. They are discounted depending on the length of the hire.

We recommend hiring your car seat from specialists such as FAMILIB.

If you do need to hire one, avoid peer-to-peer booking platforms, as the products are not always very reliable or suitable. Specialist rental companies have recent models that are well-maintained for hire. They offer a range of car seats well-suited to children’s height and weight.
